Response Time vs Uptime: Measuring What Users Actually Feel

Monitoring·6 min read·By the TorixPulse Team

Your dashboard says 100% uptime, but customers are complaining the site is slow. Both can be true. Uptime and response time measure different things, and you need both to understand the experience you're actually delivering.

Uptime: is it working?

Uptime answers a yes/no question — did the service respond correctly? It's essential but blunt: a page that takes eight seconds to load still counts as "up."

Response time: how fast?

Response time measures how long the server took to respond — the difference between a site that feels instant and one that feels broken even when it's online. Slow responses cost conversions long before a full outage does.

The "degraded" state

Treat "slow" as its own status. Set a response-time threshold — say 1,500ms — above which the monitor flags the service as degraded. That's your early warning that performance is sliding.

Watch trends, not just single numbers. A slow, steady rise in response time is often the first sign of a capacity or database problem.
Monitor it with TorixPulseTorixPulse graphs response time and flags a degraded state automatically.
